Matlock 3rds 7 v Derby 3's

A travelling 3rd team went to St Benedict's School, Derby to face a relegation zone battle, against Derby 3's.

Unfortunately we faced an expected, enhanced 3rd team.

Matlock started with a structured team talk, thanks to the purchase of a hockey grid board - Nicky Camfield and new tactics! With a motivated side we started with attacks from the midfield, especially down the wings, using the tactics of quick balls to release players. Matlock were in control for the first 10mins ever pressing but soon found Derby in a run-away situation and scored to take the lead.

Matlock leveled within a couple of minutes though, from sweeper Claire Croll passing to Julia Bould on the right, who ran to pass to Beth H-T, picking up the ball with a superb strong cross from the back line into the D, to a waiting Victoria Stokes, on the left post to slap the ball home.

Derby 3s had a number of short corners, but Matlock defence stayed strong and none were successful in being scored, due to good running from Jenny Allwood and Fleur to break down the attacks.

Half time came and Matlock were still in control of the game and feeling ever positive. The girls were praised for following the game plan and trying the new tactics put to them - with success! Izzy was given a new tactic and rather than being forced off the pitch by a Derby defender, she turned into the defender and soon became in control of the ball - winning fouls regularly - well done!

As the 2nd half started, Matlock were drawn up to the attacking play and soon found themselves 3-1 down. With 2 free attackers for one goal and a bouncing bomb from another.

This normally see's the start of numerous goals piling in as heads drop and midfield stop coming back. But Matlock stayed strong and focused, with no heads dropping and the midfield battling on. It took it's time coming, and the hail/heavy wind abd rain to come for Matlock, they pulled a goal back from Claire Croll striking the ball from behind the centre line into the D, for Victoria Stokes to get a crucial touch into the goal, leaving the GK standing and bemused.

The game finished 2-3 to Derby 3s (boosted with 2s) and Matlock now sit firmly at the bottom of the table. The team is getting stronger, but the results are slow in coming.

Man of the match was awarded to Elise Charlton, for her hard work, battling and constant running throughout the match. Well done!
