Matlock 3rds v Matlock 2nd's

Matlock 3rd team were at home in the 2nd round of the cup after a bye, and faced an inter-club match against Matlock 2s.

This was to be an expected win by the 2nd however, the 3s arrived to the pitch with a very different thought process to the inevitable. The 3s consisted of a squad of 15 players and all but a handful under the age of 16!

The game started with lots of attacking pressure from the 2s was continuous but they failed to get through the defence of the 3s. The pressure was absorbed and any shots on goal they did achieve were easily kicked away by GK Chris Poyser.

The first half was high intensity and the 2s started to become rattled by the defence of Fleur, Jenny Allwood, Lizzy and Claire Croll, all standing their ground and breaking down the play. The midfield and forwards worked hard and managed to break down the defence of the 2s, but were not able to test the GK Amanda Jacques. Half time came and I consider this a result for the hard working 3s - there was no score at all. The 3s had won the battle in the first half!

Teams were focused and as expected the 2s came out hard, determined to break the 3s defence. Their patience came as Grace was free on the post, to receive a pass through and beat GK Chris in the goal.

Soon afterwards a short corner was awarded to Matlock 2s and this time, after failing at a number of corners throughout the game, they managed to hit the goal through Kate Meynell striking hard.

As the second half continued, attacks started to balance out more and the 3s started to make progress up the pitch with their fitness, but still unable to find the goal or obtain any short corners.

The game finished 0-2 to the 2s, but they had to work to get a result. The game shows that the 3s are becoming more focused, stronger and skill full to be able to take on adults. The kids in the team worked hard and many had their best game of the season, tactically and physically.

Man of the match was awarded to Fleur who had her best game and Claire Croll for breaking down the attacks. Well done to everyone for this weeks game, lets take it forward for next weeks top of the league team.
